All rise - as Disney introduces the latest member of its Royal Family...

Princess Tiana is the star of the upcoming 2009 Disney film The Princess and the Frog. The film has a limited release date in the USA (in NY and LA only) as the 25th November , and will be released in US theaters on December 11th - (26th Dec in Australia).   This film will mark the return of Disney to traditional hand drawn animation and will bring to fans the 9th Disney Princess. The latest member of Disney's Royal Family, Princess Tiana, is the first Disney Princess to come along in 11 years  - with the last Disney Princess being 1998’s Mulan.

The Princess and the frog storyline centers on young Tiana, a girl living in the French Quarter of New Orleans during the 1920s Jazz Age and a prince named Naveen who has been transformed into a frog by the evil voodoo magician Dr. Facilier. The story will feature a trumpet playing alligator, a love sick Cajun firefly and a host of other charming characters at every turn.

A preview was given at the recent US Toy Fair, of the Disney merchandise that will accompany the release of the movie.With bright, regal colors like purple, green, gold and blue, the toys and merchandise will evoke life in New Orleans and the bayou, where the film is set. The collection includes dolls,role-play items, playsets and costumes as well as many colorful accessories.

The Princess and the Frog Tiana doll ($25) from Mattel, will probably be the most popular toy from the line. Just as in the story, beautiful Princess Tiana wears her sparkly blue ball gown and comes with her frog Prince Naveen. The gown will light up (fiber optics) and the doll and the little green frog will interact! In addition to the signature Tiana doll, Prince Naveen and Princess Tiana will be available in wedding attire.

Why Can't I Duet? Now You Can!

After the success of last years 2008 season of “Can You Duet”, the producers (Fremantle Media who are the same ones who do American Idol) have decided to do it all again in 2009.

Joey and Rory, Caitlin and Will and The Coppollas all secured record deals from the last season. with Joey and Rory even receiving a nomination in the Academy of Country Music Awards.

Auditions were held on March 7^th at Nashville’s WildHorse Saloon and were attended by close to 5000 contestants. The judges have just been revealed and are different from last year.

Last year’s judges were Naomi Judd, hit Music Row songwriter Aimee Mayo and vocal coach Brett Manning. This year, the older half of legendary duo, "The Judds" returns and is joined by the top hat wearing Big Kenny and CEO of Big Machine records (home of Taylor Swift), Scott Borchetta. The premier is set for June 20, 2009.

Contestants could have submitted a video audition or simply shown up on the Can You Duet open casting call day. Industry insiders, producers and employees of the show culled the over 5000 contestants to a more manageable number, at which point the actual judges became involved.

There were a lot of talented people who entered the competition. Some got through to the final 10 couples and some didn't. The styles of the competitors was also quite varied. Everything from husband's and wives, mums and daughters, twin sisters, twin brothers, best friends, fathers and sons and total strangers who just met in the line outside.

The show is already in the can and hence the punters lucky enough to be in the audience, are privy to the results of the show.

The taping dates were April 7, 11, 14, 18, 21, 24 and 30 and the show began around 8pm.

Jake explains “the movie is so enormous and so many people have put their time and energy into making a film like this. It’s amazing.”

Jerry emphasizes that the film is a massive epic set in a huge world with massive fantasy. It far outweighs what you may have viewed in other movies. Jake thinks Jerry is trying to outdo Jerry.

These are in no particular order and are just the tip of an impressive iceberg. I’d like to know what movies you guys would have on your list, and of course, the typical comments on how I’m a jerk-off for certain picks and a miscreant heathen for leaving off others.

1.  MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL

 

Come on, this one’s a given!

 

“Your arm’s off!”

“No it isn’t!”

“What’s that then?”

“Come on, ya pansy!”

 

This is intelligent, cerebral humor at its finest. Screw Hannibal Lechter; I’ll take the Killer Bunny in a fight any day. The Knights Who Say “Neet” take crap from no one!

 

2. FIELD OF DREAMS

 

“Hey dad, wanna have a catch?” – Nothing more needs be said.

 

3. RUDY

 

I’ve cried very seldomly in my adult life. Once when I stubbed my toe on the corner of my stupid waterbed and once when Rudy got accepted into Notre Dame… Oh yea, and when my dad died.

 

4. ARMAGEDDON

 

Space travel, guys shooting at each other, Liv Tyler in a bed scene, heroism and even a scene where the sweating guy has to figure out which wire to cut. Tell me what more you could possibly want from a movie?! When Liv says good-bye to her father, I almost stub my toe again.

 

5. 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU

 

Argh! It’s so tough to have to publicly put this one on my list! This flick is really chick-ish, but even though I can't explain it, I really enjoy it. Although this movie has one of the most aluminum foil chewingly frustrating scenes in history. Julia Stiles protects Heath Ledger by exposing her chestal region to a teacher to distract him so Heath can make his escape. But the camera never turns to take a shot of her from the front!

 

What a gyp!

 

Every time I watch that scene I hold out pathetic hope that this time I’ll get the angle I want. - Oh, and in case you're considering trying it, if you run to the other side of your TV when that scene comes on...

 

No dice.

 

If Julia Stiles is reading this – or if any of you happen to know her – could you please let her know that I’d REALLY  like to see her boobies… If she doesn’t mind.

 

6. NAPOLEON DYNAMITE

 

Yea, a lot of you are going to really rip me a new one for this, but I can’t help it; I laugh my ass off every time I watch this. The funny thing is, for some reason, the first time I saw it, I didn’t even really like it… Which begs the question, then why did you even watch it a second time?

 

I don’t know.

 

All I do know is, it REALLY grew on me. The time machine bought off the Internet is classic. When Uncle Rico whips the steak at Napoleon, I almost wet myself. When Napoleon chucks the oranges at Rico I completely lose it.

 

7. FINDING FORRESTER

 

I’m not generally a big Sean Connery fan, except for his “appearances” on SNL Jeopardy. “That’s not what your mother said, Trebek!” But he is phenomenal in “Finding Forrester. (If you’re really a fan of the movie, you’ll understand exactly why I began that last sentence with “but.”)

 

This is the ultimate feel good about a man-man relationship movie for heterosexual men. That’s not to say that homosexual men wouldn’t like it, but I’m assuming there are other feel good, man-man movies they also like.

 

I’m just kidding. – Lighten up, gay guys.

 

8. BLAZING SADDLES

Cleavon Little was hilarious! It is truly a shame that he usually isn't mentioned in conversations regarding ground-breaking African-Americans in film, as Cleavon should be right there with Poitier, Pryor and the other greats.

There ya have it; a very short, incomplete list of movies to have with you if you find yourself stranded on a deserted island… Of course, I don’t think deserted islands are known for their electrical outlets, but you could always read the cases.
